What we do every day matters!

We recognize that all children hope for a bright future. That's why Home Start works tirelessly to help families identify and use their strengths to build a better future for themselves. We are committed to a community-based collaborative effort reaching out to children and families at risk and preventing child abuse and neglect. It takes a dedicated staff, working every day to make changes.

Our History

Founded in 1972 as a highly successful, national Head Start demonstration project, Home Start targets children living in poverty who require immediate, comprehensive solutions to ensure their safety and healthy development. In 1977, Home Start Inc. incorporated as a San Diego-based, private nonprofit agency dedicated to child abuse prevention and family strengthening services.

Home Start's service continuum is based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs which emphasizes the importance of integrating meeting basic needs along with providing prevention, intervention and treatment services.

We address the developmental, safety and emotional needs of children and their families who are dealing with conditions such as mental illness, poverty, domestic violence, trauma, juvenile crime, unsafe neighborhoods, lack of affordable housing and unemployment - i.e. the situations that place children at risk of living in abusive and/or non-thriving environments.

Additionally, Home Start has expertise and extensive experience in facilitating community-capacity building and improved systems of care on behalf of San Diego's most vulnerable children and families.
